TESTING FOR LEARNING

There are two kinds of tests for learning. The first is diagnostic, which as the name implies, is a way to determine what students know in order to provide them with the appropriate level of instruction. The second is designed to measure progress. The latter is not simply an evaluation of performance but also an indication of whether the student is learning.

Instructors and students can use a variety of tools as feedback devices to help adjust instruction; these tools can also determine what and how students are learning. Multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and standardized tests are the easiest to use, since numerical scoring and graphically presented data are possible. Other types of evaluations, such as journaling, discussions, or reflecting on the work, although more complex to use, provide important and deep information. If instructors examine test items or review written material carefully, they can see trends. As necessary, instructors can reteach or clarify areas that students seem to find difficult to grasp.

Students can use their own results from numerically scored tests to correct their errors and review problem areas. If written evaluations are shared among students as well as the instructors, students can learn from classmates’ observations and also engage in discussions about areas that are confusing or unclear.
